Evaluation:

For this assignment we was required to create a poster on one of the topics we had learnt about over the last six weeks, using the program flash. I decided to create mine on the Logo Turtle. I chose this topic because I felt like it was one that I understood most and I remember actually using the device in primary school many years ago.

My found most of the research tasks manageable as they were quite straightforward, although some were challenging such as the artificial intelligence and learning about the Project Cybersyn as I had never heard or looked into them.

When it came to creating my poster, I had a vague idea of what I wanted to get from this project and that was a basic understanding of the program Adobe Flash whilst also completing a finished poster. I managed to get my idea onto the program by creating a moving movie clip of the logo turtle. I did this by taking an image from Google, putting it into Photoshop to cut out and then copying it onto the flash software. I then added the title of the Logo Turtle, making it a button that when you touch pops up information of the device.

Using the software was challenging as I was not familiar with it, however I am happy with my outcome as although I struggled to use it I managed to complete a poster and make it interactive for the public by including a movie clip and button.

Autonomous Car

An Autonomous Car is a car which does not need a driver in order to actually drive as it uses artificial intelligence in order to sense it’s surroundings and is able to navigate itself to its destination.

Driver-less cars are becoming more wanted on the market in countries such as USA, Canada and the UK. The UK has actually announced funding for the autonomous cars following Brexit. (see article below)

Google launched a ‘Self-Driving Car Project’. In their video of how it works it explains how the computer is trained to detect movement of other cars, cyclists and people around the car in order to keep everyone and everything safe. They mention that the project is not yet complete and obviously has a lot of work to do before it is but they gradually assess different situations of how the car can work on the road with just the use of artificial intelligence.

Posters:

The “We Can Do It!” poster also referred to as the “Rosie the Riveter” (the woman who was the leader of women working in factories during the time of World War 2) is an iconic American poster produced in 1943. The purpose of the poster was to promote female rights and show that they can do the same jobs as men in the work force, during the Suffragettes era, a time where women had very little rights.

The poster is attractive and eye catching due to the bright colours used and also the woman pictured in a masculine pose, which would have been very unlikely for the time it was produced. The short catch phrase “We Can Do It!” grabs the attention of the viewer as it is put in a bold, bright, easy to read font.

This poster is an iconic poster from the beginning of World War one, when America was building up their troops to send in to the war. The poster features “Uncle Sam” a man who represented patriotism. The poster is very simple in terms of its a meaning, with “Uncle Sam” placed right in the centre of the page, pointing directly at the viewer, encouraging viewers who see it to join the war and fight for their country. The headline is very straight forward, addressing whoever is reading as it uses personal pronouns in order to capture the audience.

Artificial Intelligence:

Artificial intelligence also known as AI is the intelligence of computers, devices and machines. The theory has been around hundreds of years and formed from Greek myths about robots. The understanding of the intelligence is that the computer is able to convey the same intelligence of a human. Artificial Intelligence is a form of computers being able to perform simple tasks that humans normally do such as speech recognition, for example, Apple introducing Siri back in 2010. Siri works as a personal assistant being able to call, text, tweet and set alarms, these are just a few examples of what it does just by asking your device to do so.

Artificial Intelligence has a major impact on our lives already with people not actually knowing what it is, it operates within our phones, cars and everyday banking.

Below is the advert for Apple's Siri when it first launched displaying the different tasks Siri is able to complete:

Lost Media: The Typewriter:

The typewriter is a mechanical machine invented in 1868 by Christopher Sholes, Frank Hall and Carlos Glidden. The machine features a keyboard, not like the keyboard we know today but more of a simple very spaced out buttons with the letters of the alphabet on (see photo below)

Their were many version of a typewriter before the one created by Sholes, Hall and Glidden (theirs was the first majorly successful one) it made such a large impact because it introduced a new way of communication for the world, allowing not only businessmen but also civilians to have a clearer, easier and quicker way of writing rather than by hand.

The typewriter is clearly a major step back from the technology we as 21st century people know, due to the fact of the way it works meaning, you have to load paper into the device in order for it to work, and once you hit a button that letter transfers onto the paper loaded. There is no delete button, therefore meaning you have to start again if a mistake is made. I watched a video from 2014 of kids reacting to typewriters, despite many of them knowing what the device was from TV shows they have watched or their parents owning one, they were completely oblivious and shocked as to how it actually works, displaying the major shift in technology and how it has transformed.
